How to Add Shadow to Product Photography in Photoshop

Table of Contents

Why Add Shadows to Product Images?

To take your eCommerce product images from ordinary to professional, you need to pay attention to the details that elevate visual appeal. Simple but effective tweaks like adding natural product shadows can greatly enhance your product photos — grounding them in reality and giving them depth.

When you invest time and effort in your product images, it directly translates into customers feeling more connected to your brand and more willing to purchase from you.

You don't need a huge budget or a big team to create excellent product photos. It takes patience and an attention to detail to make your images stand out.

So, how do we add shadows to our product photography?

Using Adobe Photoshop, we'll walk you through how to add a realistic shadow to a product image. We'll be using a shoe to illustrate the method, but you can apply these steps to virtually any product.

Step-by-Step Guide to Adding a Shadow in Photoshop

Step 1: Open Your Image

Open Adobe Photoshop and load the image you wish to add a shadow to. In our example, the shoe is on a white background with no shadow at all. As you can see, the image looks a bit flat and not particularly realistic.

Step 2: Create a New Layer

Create a new layer between the background and shoe layers. Click "Create a new layer" in the bottom right-hand corner (this will appear as Layer 1).

Step 3: Set Your Foreground Colour

Click on the colour picker on the left-hand side, then choose black as your foreground colour.

Step 4: Select the Brush Tool

Select the brush tool from the left-hand toolbar. Click the brush size button on the top toolbar, then adjust the hardness so you have a nice feathered brush — bring it right down to 0%.

Top tip: You can use the square bracket keys to make the brush bigger or smaller.

Step 5: Draw an Ellipse Selection

Select the ellipse marquee tool from the left-hand toolbar. Draw a shape roughly the same size and proportions as the base of your product.

Step 6: Fill with Black

Using the fill tool, fill the ellipse selection with black.

Step 7: Position the Shadow

Position the shape to reflect the angle of the shadow. It does not need to be perfectly accurate at this stage.

Step 8: Adjust Opacity

Reduce the opacity slightly — you can fine-tune this later. You may also rename Layer 1 to "Shadow" for better organisation.

Step 9: Add a Layer Mask

Click "Add a layer mask" in the bottom right-hand corner. Make sure the black colour is selected and that the mask is active on the shadow layer.

Step 10: Brush the Shadow Shape

Gently brush into the ellipse shape. The top right-hand edge of the ellipse should be much lighter than the bottom end closer to the shoe — just as you'd find with natural shadows. Using the mask gives you flexibility to add or remove colour as needed.

You want to end up with something that looks roughly like a natural ground shadow.

Step 11: Apply Gaussian Blur

With the layer selected (not the mask), go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Apply the minimum amount of blur you need. Areas close to the shoe should be sharper, whilst areas further away should be fainter and more blurred.

Step 12: Fine-Tune

Now it's simply a case of adjusting the blur, adding or removing dark and light tones from the shadow mask, and tweaking the opacity until everything looks completely believable. Keep adjusting until you're satisfied.

Tips for Realistic Shadows

Those are the basic principles behind adding a shadow to a product image. It may take a bit of practice before you're comfortable creating shadows, but once you've mastered the technique, you'll be able to produce them quickly and consistently.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Study real shadows — observe how light falls on objects to replicate natural-looking results.
  • Keep it subtle — overly dark or sharp shadows look artificial.
  • Match the lighting direction — your shadow should align with the light source in the original photograph.

FAQ

How long does it take to add a shadow in Photoshop? For a simple drop shadow, the process takes around 5–10 minutes once you're familiar with the steps. More complex natural shadows with multiple light sources can take longer.

What type of shadow works best for eCommerce product images? A soft, natural ground shadow is the most popular choice. It grounds the product without distracting from it, making the image look realistic on a white background.

Can I add shadows to product photos without Photoshop? Yes, tools like GIMP (free) or Canva offer basic shadow features. However, for professional-quality results — especially at scale — Photoshop or a dedicated editing service like Pixel by Hand will produce the best outcome.

Do Amazon and Shopify allow shadows on product images? Amazon allows minimal shadows on the main image, provided they appear only at the base and don't obscure the product. Shopify is more flexible with its image guidelines.

Is it better to photograph shadows or add them in post-production? Both approaches work. Capturing natural shadows during the shoot gives the most authentic result, but adding them in post-production gives you complete control over placement, intensity, and consistency across your entire catalogue.
